Ex-Zomato CMO's Yumist raises $1 million from Orios to deliver food efficiently

Monday February 02, 2015 , 3 min Read

Yumist, a food delivery startup that started operations in Gurgaon in October 2014 has raised it's first round of funding from Orios Venture Partners. Yumist was founded by Alok Jain, a technology entrepreneur and ex-CMO at Zomato along with Abhimanyu Maheshwari, a seasoned F&B entrepreneur. to provide easy access to tasty and homely daily-meals. A combination of food, logistics and tech, Yumist owns the entire delivery supply chain. It allows customers to place orders in a few seconds through it's Android app and the meal is delivered hot in under 30 minutes (see Uber for X startups in India). The investment will be used by Yumist to grow it’s team, expand geographically and build it’s production, technology and delivery infrastructure.

Yumist has more than 500 customers at the moment with a lot of them being repeat customers. The average ordering time on the app is 25 seconds and the average delivery time has been 19 minutes so far. "We are trying to redefine how and what people eat at offices with quality and convenience being at the top of our agenda," says Alok. Yumist is currently a team of 15 and is likely to go over 50 in the coming three months.

There are other startups in the food delivery space like Bangalore based Tapcibo and Eatlo but Yumist wants to differentiate on the basis of kind of meals they offer and a sophisticated delivery infrastructure powered by technology. "With options like Rajma Chawal, Chicken Chawal, Aloo Parathe, etc Yumist is catering to the low priced daily meals market, and using technology to solve the challenges faced by customers in this market. We are currently priced at INR 85 but as we grow, the aim is to take this below 70," says Alok.

Abhimanyu, Founder & COO at Yumist, said "Every meal offered by us goes through rigorous trials and quality controls before making it's appearance on the Yumist menu. Food has to arrive at your desk at a specific temperature & texture and we have a sophisticated, constantly evolving supply chain in place to ensure that."

Over the past few months, Yumist has been piloting its offering in Cyber City, Gurgaon. Having achieved a proof of concept, they are now looking to expand aggressively across NCR and beyond in the next 9 months. "Our view is that the customer wants home style reasonably priced meals where quality is a must. Alok & Abhimanyu have understood that and created a scalable business model that can address this really large need and we are excited to partner them" said Sumir Verma, Venture Partner at Orios.
