Nursery Rhymes are little poems and songs that every child has learned during their childhood since decades and centuries. The world has changed drastically and is developing every day, but nursery rhymes are here to stay! Reading them stories at an age between 1- 4 is quite boring whereas nursery rhymes are rhythmic, hilarious, fun and entertaining.

Nursery Rhymes are a boost for language development and promote story telling. It develops reading skills of the child. It helps your toddlers to learn, identify and manipulate letter sounds. Rhymes expand imagination of the child; it takes them to fantasy world, widening their visualisation skills. Rhymes help in promoting social skills and sense of unity. Reading loud with the children in classroom encourages them to participate and recite the poems together. Their bond gets on well with other children while singing the same song. Nursery rhymes are the foundation stone to read and spell. This is the first step towards their reading skills before entering schools. Good reading gives them good command over their learning and language skills.

Learning nursery rhymes in English expands vocabulary, predictions, phonics, oral language etc. They learn to pronounce new words while playing and singing rhymes without much pressure. Enacting the rhymes in sort of drama or hand expressions boosts self confidence among children. Rhymes and songs are building blocks for expression and creativeness. Children who have read nursery rhymes for long enough are good readers in school compared to children who have not.

Besides, there are lot of ways to teach nursery rhymes to children. Rhymes can either be taught to children for great reading skills or can be sung as a lullaby to stop a cranky or crying child. Few great ways to teach a little one are as follows:

• Sketching picture of the characters of the rhyme will enhance memory and association skills. It will help them to link the rhyme to the character and remember their names as well.

• One has to be patient with kids while reciting or making them read rhymes. They need to be taught how to articulate or voice the words by continuously repeating the words to them. Repetitive words in rhymes will force them to work hard on the word and use their tongue to read and spell the word.

• The parent or teacher need to be interactive and interesting with the kids to make the rhymes favorite for your toddlerIt has to be entertaining and rhythmic to bring cheer and fun while reciting. It will not only enhance their cognitive abilities but will also make co ordination powerful between hand and eyes.

• In today’s generation when kids are so prone to TV and gadgets, kids should be taught and encouraged to watch more of Kids TV channels  that are educational in nature.

• Sing and be with them wherever possible like while changing diapers, going for a drive or going to sleep. They should also be encouraged to sing along while being silly and goofy!

• Patience is the key, making them learn rhymes should be a fun affair and not a boring chore. The child may not be quick in learning or may mix up the words, it should be perfectly ok.

• At the end, the session should stopped by asking them questions in a natural way. This will be the quickest way to memorise a rhyme and will definitely work faster on them.
