From big and fat to small and intimate: OYO's Weddingz reveals 2020 wedding trends
In Wows Report 2020, OYO's Weddingz reveals that 15.5K weddings were held in the year of the pandemic. Delhi held the maximum number of weddings, followed by Mumbai, Pune, Lucknow, and Kolkata.
2020 was the year when 'the big fat Indian wedding' made way for small and intimate weddings. In its recent report Wows Report 2020, OYO's Weddingz reveals some of the trends in the wedding industry, amidst the pandemic.
According to the report, 15,500 weddings were conducted across the country this year, via Weddingz platform, as compared to 27,000 events conducted by the platform in 2019.
The Wows Report 2020 suggests that Delhi held the maximum number of weddings, followed by Mumbai, Pune, Lucknow, and Kolkata.
CEO of OYO's Weddingz Sandeep Lodha said:
"This year has been quite a journey for the Indian wedding industry. Recovering from a complete standstill due to the lockdown to reaching 75-80 percent of pre-COVID level demand towards the end of 2020, the wedding industry has learnt and adapted to newer ways to sustain operations."
He further added, "We expect the wedding industry to reach 35 percent of pre-COVID levels in 2021 if there are further relaxations on guest list limitations, which will increase the scale of weddings and number of events per wedding. Through the coming year, Weddingz.in will focus more on tech-driven services to enhance customer experiences, thereby making wedding planning a seamless experience.”
Wedding preparations have changed in the times of the pandemic
Wedding trends of 2020
- Biggest wedding: Weddingz.in organised a Rs 32 lakh wedding with 300 people on the guestlist at Udaipur's Radisson Blu.
- Smallest wedding: Over 60 percent of the total number of weddings held between June and September saw less than 50 people in the guestlist (eight percent of the weddings had less than 25 attendees).
- Pre-COVID, February saw the maximum number of weddings, and post-COVID December saw the most number of weddings.
- Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad were the top three cities that opted for virtual weddings.
- Biggest virtual wedding: Mumbai hosted the biggest virtual wedding with 50 guests live streaming and 50 attending the wedding physically, in August.
- On November 30, the maximum number of couples, 383 of them, exchanged wedding vows.
- The average wedding expenditure in 2020 was down to Rs 1.7 lakh in 2020, as compared to Rs 2.4 lakh in 2019.
- Destination weddings were held in Goa, Udaipur, Cuttack, and Puri.
